Yielding to Jesus as Lord can be hard, but God makes a way, #3

Matthew 20:20-22 addresses the question of where your treasure, what you truly value, is.  The rich young ruler knew himself so well that he was upset he couldn’t change how he felt about his wealth and possessions.  From Jesus’ teachings in verses 23 and 24, it’s truly doubtful whether he changed his mind about his choice to value his riches above Jesus and the kingdom of God.  How sad that he didn’t ask Jesus for help.  There are some things we just don’t have the power or ability to change on our own, no matter how much will power or determination we have.

God doesn’t want you to struggle with changes by yourself, and He stands ready and so very willing to help.  What He’s looking for is your desire to change along with your surrendering your will to His so that He can transform you into a true disciple who is focused on what really matters.

Scripture:  Matthew 20:20-22

Then the young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth.  What do I still lack?”  Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;  and, come, follow Me”.  But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Let’s Pray

Father God, You know better than anyone else how hard it is to change, and yet this is what is required of all believers and disciples.  Please help me to change what I can and trust You to take care of the rest, for Jesus promised never to place more on me than I can handle.  Help me to rely on You and Jesus and the Holy Spirit so totally that I come to You all day and every day to guide my life.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

Things to Think, Pray and Journal About

1.  Are you willing to accept the help God is ready to give you while you’re growing in His grace and knowledge?

2.  Is there something in your life that you would find very hard to give up?  Does that stand between you and the kingdom?

3.  Did you know that Abraham had a terrible choice to make and followed what God told him to do even though it broke his heart and could have changed God’s promise to him?  God makes a way when the heart is right.  Turn to Genesis 22 for the wonderful details.
