Being spirit-led can be hard, but God makes a way, #3

How important it is to use the gifts, talents and abilities you have been blessed with in the right way for the right reasons.  Jesus clearly tasked the disciples to preach to the lost sheep of Israel and perform miracles to direct attention to the message they had been sent to deliver.  In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul teaches about the gifts of the Spirit, stating in verse 11:  “But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills”.  Wanting the gift of healing is wonderful, but it is God who determines when and where that gift is manifested according to His plan and purpose.  Wanting to be the instrument of other signs and wonders is great, but these gifts are to be used to bring people’s’ attention to God and the message He has for them.

God can and will use some of us powerfully in this way, but it has to be His plan and timing.  God the Holy Spirit is the one who both empowers and commissions us for these kingdom-related tasks.

God the Holy Spirit also trains and teaches you in the use of whatever spiritual gifts He has seen fit to bless you with.  That’s why it’s so important to follow His lead.  Many have been the times believers were led to do and say things that didn’t make sense at the time but later saw it was part of God’s plan and purpose.  Please make sure that, like with Jesus’ voice, you know God the Holy Spirit’s voice, too.   Be sure to ask for the gift of spiritual wisdom and discernment so you can truly know that you hear God and not His counterfeit.

Scripture:  Matthew 10:1, 7-8

And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.  ‘And as you go, preach, saying The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’  Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons.”

Let’s Pray

Father God, help me to truly be Christ’s disciple.  Help me to rightly use the gifts, talents and abilities so freely given by the Holy Spirit and through Jesus’ authority.  Help me to focus on Your plans and purposes for Your kingdom so that I may be a worthy, yielded instrument and vessel for You in demonstrating Your attention-getting power creating signs and wonders.  May I never use these special gifts for my own gain or pleasure but for the purposes for which they were intended.

Things to Think, Pray and Journal About

1.  Have you been aware of your spiritual gifts and tried to use them without the Spirit’s commissioning?  What happened?

2.  Do you have a passionate desire for a spiritual gift?  Have you asked the Holy Spirit to grant it to you and train you and empower you in its use?

3.  Did you know that the very character of God, love, is a spiritual gift?  Have you asked God to help you be love as He is?
