Care giving is tough, but God makes a way, #3

Just like Elijah, who was rocked by threats against his life after a hugely successful but draining encounter with Ahab and the prophets of Baal, God is here for you at times when you are drained.  Like Elijah, the emotions and stress may cause you to want to “die”, to give up.  God gave Elijah what he needed to release the stress, and He will do the same for you, too.

God knows your needs.  He doesn’t want you to get burned out like Elijah did.  He hopes you will make right, wise choices to maintain your caregiving effectiveness and take care of your needs as well.  If you do make mistakes and place more stress on yourself than you can bear, He will be there to help you in ways you need just like He did Elijah.

Encouraging Scripture:  1 Kings 19: 4-8

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under the broom tree.  And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough!  Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”  Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.”  Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals and a jar of water.  So he ate and drank and lay down again.  And the angel of the Lord came back a second time, and touched him, and said, “arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.”  So he arose and ate and drank;  and he went on the strength of that food for forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb.

Let’s Pray

Father God, You sent Your son Jesus to minister to those who have needs.  When Jesus had needs, He turned to You, and, when His part was finished among us, He sent the Holy Spirit to minister to us, too.  As a care giver, I feel very overwhelmed and burdened, and I ask You, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to minister to me.  Speak to me through the supportive, comforting and encouraging words of scripture and through these teachings and those You send across my path to comfort and encourage me.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

Things to Think, Pray and Journal About

1.  Did you know you can ask God for help to stop your downward emotional and physical reaction to the stress of care giving?

2.  Did you know one of the biggest mistakes we all make is relying on our abilities and self instead of God’s power and empowerment?
