Being a follower of Jesus Christ is serious stuff! A disciple follows the lead of his teacher, and Jesus was prepared to hold nothing back from those men (or us!), and He wants to know that we are willing to do and be the same. God may have called you to be a disciple, but He wants you to choose to be a disciple just like you chose to be a believer when you accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior. Here, you have the opportunity to enter a very special relationship with Him that goes far beyond the believer level. He wants you to prayerfully choose how much of Him you want.
Love requires sacrifice. It can be time, money or possessions. It can be listening to the hurting when you’re hurting yourself. It can be you hurting when you’ve done nothing wrong like Job, Joseph, David and countless others. At the end, you get to choose whether you want to be love as God is or whether you are satisfied the way you are. I can’t promise life will be easy when you choose God and His way on a spiritually mature level, but, oh, the blessing of that special relationship that lasts forever!
Encouraging Scripture: John 16: 12-13
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, than to lay down his life for his friends.
Father God, this is hard to ask, but help me to be like Jesus and sacrifice all that I have and am for those You send across my path. Help me to be balanced and choose wisely with Your guiding and leading what to do when and for whom. Fill me with Your love so that I can have the spiritual eyes to see and the spiritual ears to hear what is truly needed and best for the situation. Unite my heart like David asked so that I can be the best and most complete for You and whatever task You place before me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Things to Think, Pray and Journal About
1. Have you asked God to show you what could prevent you from fully embracing Him like jesus showed the young ruler in Matthew 19:16-26?
2. Have you asked God to help you see people and situations the way he does? if so, have you noticed the differences between your way and His?
