This is the Jesus who came to teach us how to live! While His commands are not necessarily easy, they are truly simple. It’s not easy to put God first when you’re doing what you want to do and you feel a leading from the Holy Spirit to do what God wants NOW. It’s not easy to love your neighbor when you are taking some truly well-deserved quality relaxing time and a need suddenly pops up. Living the Great Commandment means you choose to do and be what Jesus commands you to do and be regardless of what you want to do or be at that time. Putting God first means you show kindness instead of impatience when a child or coworker interrupts you.
How simple is our Christ. By putting God and all that He is first, you choose to think and be right, and that allows you to think and do right for others and yourself.
Scripture: Matthew 22:36-40
Teacher, what is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. And the second is like unto it. “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Father God, help me to truly put You and the kingdom first in my thoughts and actions. Help me to honor You in everything I say and do, and please help me to love You like You want to be loved. Help me to embrace You not only as my God but as my Friend and Companion every moment of my life. Help me ot make the things that are important to You important to me, too. Thanks for transforming me daily to become more like You so that, together, we can truly enjoy this life now and eternity later. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Things to Think, Pray and Journal About
1. What can you do today to show God how much you love Him?
2. How can you be love to a neighbor, a coworker or a family member today?
3. Have you asked God what it means to love Him with all your heart?
